But which one should you choose and what will give you the best gaming experience or match you are looking for? We have the answer.

The best Baldur's Gate 3 class is Cleric, Paladin, Barbarian or Sorcerer. This is because these classes offer amazing healing abilities, sturdy armor for your character, and a wide variety of magic and spells to use in combat and during exploration.

This list establishes which class can work well throughout your playthrough. Since you are expected to invest a lot of time in the campaign, it is ideal to have a viable character from the start for a smooth process.

We should note that our ranking here is based on preference, as well as ideal subclass, racial, and ability choices. Yours may vary depending on your playstyle (ie roleplaying purposes or unique combos). But overall, these are the best of the bunch:

S-level

The S-Tier classes in Baldur's Gate 3 are very integral to your playthroughs. They have spells and abilities that can really turn the tide of battle, or skills that can let you through dialogue checks.

clerical

• Role: Support and healer.
• Abilities: Wisdom -> Dexterity/Suggestion
• Best subcategory: Light
• Best Race: Wood Elf or Gold Dwarf
• Companion: Shadowheart

It's safe to say that Cleric is the best class in Baldur's Gate 3. This is mostly due to spells like Healing Word, Bless, Guiding Bolt and Guidance. You have everything you need, from healing and radiant damage to boosts to your ability checks.

Likewise, clerics are able to use medium armor and shields, allowing them to withstand a few hits. As such, you'll probably want to keep Shadowheart in your party for most of the campaign. You can even set a priest as your main character if you want.

Ridder

• Role: Melee DPS, tank and healer
• Abilities: Strength -> Charisma/Constitution
• Best Subcategory: Oath of the Ancients
• Best Matchup: Zariel Tiefling, Shield Dwarf, or Wood Half-Elf
• Companion: Minthara (full game only)

Compared to Clerics, Paladins are able to use heavy armor, making them even more tanky. While they don't have as many spells, they still get some really useful ones. Divine Smite is the bread-and-butter feature of the class, along with various Smites that deal additional damage or effects with each hit.

The reason we rank Paladin quite high on our list is because of the Oath of the Ancients and the Healing Radiance oracle. This will heal your entire party after cast, and again at the start of a round, making it an absolutely necessary spell for difficult encounters.

Barbar

• Role: Melee DPS and tank
• Abilities: Strength -> Constitution
• Best Subclass: Berserker
• Best Match: Shield Dwarf, Githyanki, or Wood Half-Elf
• Companion: Karlach (full game only)

Barbarians are the ultimate melee forces. By using Rage/Frenzy, this class gains improved attack and defense. You'll also be able to use various objects or even creatures as 'improvised weapons', either by swinging them around or throwing them at a target.

Early on, the Barbarian also gains Reckless Attack, which provides advantage on attack rolls. While the enemies gain the same advantage against you, it works out pretty well as you'll be able to take them out quickly.

Magician

• Role: DPS caster with Metamagic tool
• Abilities: Charisma -> Constitution/Dexterity
• Best Subclass: Draconic Bloodline

We think the Wizard is the absolute best class in Baldur's Gate 3, at least among pure wizards. This is mainly due to its Metamagic feature. By using Magic Points, you will be able to change the effectiveness of spells and cantrips. For example, Twinned Metamagic lets you choose two enemies to be hit by single-target spells.

Likewise, there is Quickened Metamagic, which turns a spellcast into a bonus action, thus allowing you to cast devastating Fireballs twice during your turn.

At the level

A-tier classes are still superior in their own right, as they have unique traits, abilities, and effects that can make the campaign more manageable.

Fighter

• Role: Non-magical DPS (with melee and ranged)
• Abilities: Strength -> Dexterity/Strength
• Best Subcategory: Battle Master
• Best Match: Shield Dwarf or Wood Half-Elf
• Companion: Lae'zel

The fighter already shows its true potential early in the game (probably when Lae'zel reaches level 2 or 3, assuming your main character didn't choose the same class). There is Action Surge which gives you an extra energy during your turn (ie two attacks). Next is your choice of maneuvers, which give results to your attacks. For example, you can push or trip your enemies to help control the flow of battles.

Ranger

With Familiars that can distract or wipe out enemies, and Ranger's Companions that can taunt or charge, you have plenty of tricks to use.

Magician

• Role: DPS caster with a huge pool of spells
• Abilities: Intelligence -> Constitution/Dexterity
• Best Subcategory: Evocation
• Best Match: Deep Gnome or High Elf
• Partner: Gail

Although we consider the Wizard an A-Tier option, it is still one of the best classes in Baldur's Gate 3 due to the sheer number of spells that can be learned and prepared. You have everything from Magic Missiles and Fireball to Counterspell and Fly. Perhaps the only downside here is that Sorcerers have better Metamagic potential.

Warlock

• Rolle: Caster DPS med Familiars
• Abilities: Charisma -> Constitution/Dexterity
• Best Subcategory: The Fiend
• Best Match: Drow Half-Elf or Asmodeus Tiefling
• Companion: Wild

Speaking of spellcasting classes, Warlock is still a good choice. Early on, you'll want to use Hex to counter enemies, making them more vulnerable to attacks. There's also Eldritch Blast, the only one you can spam for hours. Despite the more limited pool of magical options, you still have access to Familiars, passives that grant boons, and short breaks that refresh spell slots.

Bard

• Rolle: Support
• Abilities: Charisma -> Dexterity/Recommendation
• Best Subcategory: College of Valor
• Best Matchup: Wood/Drow Half-Elf or Asmodeus Tiefling
• Companion: N/A (none unless Larian decides to make Volo a rental companion)

As far as support classes go, you can't go wrong with a Bard. The reason for this is due to its focus on multiple skills, which allows you to often succeed on dialogue checks. In addition, the class has a unique action called Bardic Inspiration, which grants a bonus to an ally's attack roll, ability check, and saving throw. At level 4, all charges are replenished via short pauses, ensuring you get a good taste at just the right time.

B level

Overall, the B-Tier classes don't quite live up to the rest, either lacking versatility, portability, or simply being inferior to similar options above them on this list. So you want to choose something else. But if you're stuck on them, here's an overview of each.

Trickster

• Role: Stealth DPS that focuses on sneak attacks
• Abilities: Dexterity
• Best Subcategory: Thief
• Best Matchup: Wood Elf or Lolth-Sworn/Seldarine Drow
• Companion: Astarion

Rogues are really good and are able to cheese most fights given their Sneak Attack abilities, poisons and bonus actions. The reason we placed them at this point in the Baldur's Gate 3 tier list is because of high status instances. There will be times when you find yourself in combat with no time to set up or reposition, which often negates the benefits of planning everything while in stealth.

Druid

• Role: Hybrid DPS (caster and shape shifter)
• Abilities: Wisdom -> Dexterity/Suggestion
• Best subcategory: Circle of the Land
• Best Breed: Gold Dwarf or Wood Elf
• Companion: Halsin (full game only)

Finally we have the Druid. Shapeshifting looks cool and all, but you'll still want to cast spells. And while there are some decent options like Healing Word, Moonbeam, and Call Lightning, their overall set pales in comparison to the three pure enchantments.
