The Best Overall Rides at Disneyland

Although there are quite a fewexciting ridesin both Disneyland and California Adventure, there are seven total coasters between the two parks with unique themes and styles. Below, we rank the best overall coasters at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, taking into account factors such as world building, music, thrills and more!

7. Fedtmule's Sky School στο Paradise Gardens ParkBest Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (4)

Goofy's Sky School is a Wild Mouse-style steel slide that features drops and spins and reaches a top speed of 47 miles per hour. During the ride, visitors will see a poster with instructions on how to perform various maneuvers (how to take off, fly, turn, dive and land). The ride is quite short and would benefit greatly from the sound, but it offers great views of the park and a quick, exciting ride around the course.

This route also offers a Single Rider option, which you can read more about in our guideDisneyland Single Rider Lines!

This newly designed coaster is designed for little visitors! It has short drops and reaches a top speed of about 22 miles per hour, making it a good choice for younger visitors who are just getting into the world of roller coasters. Each seat is designed to accommodate one adult and one child.

The trip takes barely a minute, which makes for a short and sweet experience. Chip 'n' Dale's GADGETcoaster's vibrant colors, gentle nature and fun tail make it a great choice for kids!

Height requirement: 35" (89 cm) or taller

5. Matterhorn bobsledBest Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (6)

Matterhorn Bobsleds involves a journey of thrilling twists and turns across a snowy landscape while avoiding the not-so-happy Abominable Snowman. After an initial climb through a dark tunnel, guests begin their wild journey that twists and turns around the mountain.

The tour includes two different routes, one on the Fantasyland side of the mountain and the other on the Tomorrowland side. The tracks have some differences between them, with guests saying the Tomorrowland side is faster with a sharper drop and the Fantasy Land side is a bit smoother.

The ride is generally on the rougher side, and some visitors jokingly complain about experiencing a chiropractic adjustment surprise (or three) while being led around the mountain. We will discuss the pros and cons of this route below!

This ride has undergone several changes over the years since Disneyland opened, including a major renovation in 2012 that removed the old standing-seat design and introduced the 6-seat configuration it has today. Make sure you stay up to date with everyonerenovations and ride closures are taking place at Disneyland!

4. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad στη Frontierland

Best Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (7)

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a favorite Disneyland ride for many good reasons, but the biggest is the atmosphere and relaxed nature of the ride. It offers incredible scenery as the course winds between red rock formations of a cursed mining landscape from the 1850s. In the first ten seconds of the ride, you are transported to a dark cave with bats, stalactites and a waterfall. The world building is really impressive and even though there is no music, the fun sound effects complement the action of the ride perfectly.

Thunder Mountain's top speed is 35 miles per hour, making it a great choice for kids and visitors who don't want a super intense roller coaster ride. Although the ride is not the fastest in Disneyland, it is still exciting as it contains drops, bumps and sharp turns.

Safety restrictions for Big Thunder Mountain: a bar that lowers throughout the round of the series.

Height requirement: 40" (102 cm) or taller

2. The IncredicoasterBest Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (8)

This coaster was recycled from the popular California Screamin' during the introduction of Pixar Pier at California Adventure. Its story follows the Incredibles as they hunt down baby Jack-Jack, who has escaped and is wreaking havoc. The ride features cute animatronics, a score by Incredibles 2 composer Michael Giacchino, and effects like the smell of cookies when Mr. Incredible tries to bribe Jack-Jack with his favorite treat!

You will definitely feel the intensity of this ride as it is the bigger coaster of the two parks, with big drops and an inverted loop. The ride reaches a top speed of 55 miles per hour - prepare for your eyes to water a little!

Tip: To avoid too much whiplash if you're riding this coaster for the first time, be sure to keep your head back on the seat, especially when entering the loop.

Safety support for Incredicoaster: over the shoulders.

Height requirement: 48" (122 cm) or taller

1. RumbjergBest Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (9)

Space Mountain checks all the boxes for a perfect roller coaster. Its track is as smooth as butter and its location in deep outer space allows riders to fully immerse themselves in the thrill as the track structure is not visible and it is impossible to see the coaster's next move. The ride's simplicity as it floats through the darkness, past stars, comets and meteors, allows you to easily escape your mind and pretend you're really flying in space!

Space Mountain contains drops and sharp turns and also gradually grows faster in the last part of the ride. This is a great feature and the music swells to accompany the excitement! No matter how many times I've been on this ride, I'm always hit with a wave of inexplicable joy in the last 30 seconds when the coaster reaches its top speed.

Space Mountain has gone through some temporary theming in the past, from "Rockin' Space Mountain," which featured effects and music from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to "Hyperspace Mountain," the Star Wars-themed version that featured limited-edition routes all those years. In this edition, you emerge from hyperspace to unexpectedly engage in an exciting battle with Imperial forces.

Because Space Mountain can be quite popular, riding in the morning when the park is less crowded is a good option. Be sure to check out oursmorning strategyfor more details on how to make the most of the start of your day at Disneyland!

Top 3 children's rides in Disneyland and Disney California AdventureBest Slides in Disneyland 2023 Ranking: Overall and for Kids (11)

For younger guests dipping their toes into the world of roller coasters for the first time, there are some great roller coaster options at Disneyland. While every child is different in how they react to slides, there are some slides among the parks that are shorter and gentler.

3. Goofy's Sky School

This ride is very short in duration, just under two minutes, and its smaller scale makes it one of the less intimidating options than roller coasters in the parks. The children can also see where the course goes, which gives some peace of mind. The driver's seats are designed for two, so that adults can sit next to their children.

2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Although there are some parts of the ride that are dark (especially the beginning going through the cave), these are short lived and the atmosphere of the ride as a whole is not as intense as some of the other Disneyland rides. The queue also does a great job of creating a relaxed atmosphere! The seats are designed for two people with a single lap bar so parents can sit with their children.

1. Chip 'n' Dale's GADGETcoaster

This Disneyland coaster is designed for kids, and between its bright colors and short and sweet duration, it's a relaxed introduction to the world of roller coasters. The prerequisite for the trip is that Gadget has made several clever inventions, including a slide with acorns! The ride is fast enough that if your child isn't a fan, they won't have to sit for long, and the seats are designed so parents can sit with their kids.
